TAPA Houston is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and sharing the diverse cultures of the Pacific Islands. We do this through educational programs, cultural performances, and community engagement that strengthen cultural identity, promote cross-cultural understanding, and increase the visibility of Pacific Island communities throughout Houston.
The Pacific is not one story. It encompasses thousands of islands and dozens of distinct cultures — yet these communities are too often underrepresented and misunderstood. We exist to change that: to provide authentic cultural education, preserve traditional knowledge, and create opportunities for meaningful cultural exchange.

Why we were founded. Houston's Pacific Island community has grown significantly over the past several decades, but opportunities for collaboration and cultural education have become increasingly fragmented. TAPA Houston was established to unite Pacific Island communities, preserve cultural traditions, and share the diversity of Oceania with the broader public.
The gap we fill. Because Oceania spans so many islands and cultures, its traditions are frequently flattened into a single stereotype. We partner with cultural practitioners, educators, and community leaders to deliver programming that reflects the real breadth of Pacific cultures — and we keep expanding that representation over time.
TAPA Houston began operating in 2024 and officially received its 501(c)(3) nonprofit designation in 2026. It was founded by three sisters and their mother, whose family has been involved in Pacific Island cultural performance and education in Houston since 1979.
Building on that legacy, they created TAPA Houston to serve the cultural needs of existing and future generations — and the wider Houston community. What began as a family passing traditions from one generation to the next has grown into an organization dedicated to doing the same for an entire city.

Since its founding, TAPA Houston has operated through volunteer leadership and self-funded programming. As a newly recognized nonprofit, we are pursuing grants, sponsorships, and community partnerships to expand programming and ensure long-term sustainability.
TAPA Houston aims to become the leading resource for Pacific Island culture in Texas — expanding educational programming, cultural consultation, youth development, community partnerships, scholarship opportunities, and public cultural events.
